What it checks

  • 1 in margins in every section, and the paper size.
  • Font and size: whether it is one of APA’s example fonts and the same throughout the text.
  • Double spacing, no space before or after paragraphs, and no empty paragraphs used as spacing.
  • Left alignment without justification, and a 0.5 in first-line indent (not made with spaces).
  • An automatic page number at the top right and, if present, the running head.
  • The title page, heading levels made with Word styles, and the references label, hanging indent and order.

How it works

  1. Drag your .docx file onto the sheet or choose it from your device.
  2. Your browser analyses it in a few seconds. The file is not uploaded anywhere or changed.
  3. Read the report: each point says whether it is correct, a possible problem or not verifiable, with the APA rule and where it is.

Limits

  • Only .docx files up to 10 MB. If you have a .doc, a PDF or a Google document, save or download it as .docx.
  • It checks the file’s formatting, not its content: it does not assess writing, citations or whether references are complete.
  • A .docx does not store Word’s final pagination: anything that depends on where pages fall is marked “not verifiable”.
  • To avoid false alarms, it only checks indentation and alignment on clear text paragraphs (20 words or more). It does not check tables, figures, footnotes or headings made without Word styles.
  • Your university or instructor may ask for variations (other margins, another font). Their guidance comes first.

Frequently asked questions

What does “not verifiable” mean?

That the file cannot show it reliably: for instance, which page a heading lands on, or whether a font outside APA’s examples is fine for your instructor. Check those points yourself in Word.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The file is read in your browser, in an isolated process, and is not sent to any server. We do not store its name or content, and the report downloads straight to your device.

Does it fix the document?

No. The checker does not change your file. It tells you what to check and, when a value comes from a style (for instance “Normal”), says so, so you can change it once.

What is the difference between the checker and the formatter?

The checker only flags what does not follow APA and leaves your file untouched. The formatter will apply the basic fixes and give you a new .docx.

Does it work with Google Docs?

Yes, if you download them as Microsoft Word (.docx) from File → Download.
