APA 7 bibliography generator
Build your APA 7 reference list: it sorts itself, adds 2020a/2020b and adjusts citations. Copy it or download a .docx. Free, no sign-up.
Your list is saved only in this browser and is not sent to our servers. A DOI lookup sends only that DOI to Crossref.

Your bibliography
Changes fixed terms such as “n.d.” / “s. f.” and the file heading. It does not translate your data.
Loading your bibliography…
Every change is saved in this browser only. Nothing is sent to any server.
If you clear your browsing data, use a private window or switch browsers, the list is lost. Download the .docx to keep a copy.
What it does
- Sorts your references the APA 7 way: by the first author’s last name, letter by letter, and works by the same author from oldest to newest, with “n.d.” first.
- Adds a, b, c to the year when the same authors share a year, ordering those works by title.
- Adjusts in-text citations to your whole list: initials when two authors share a surname, and more names when two works would shorten to the same “et al.”.
- Flags possible duplicates: the same DOI, or the same author, year and title.
- Copies the list with formatting or as plain text, and downloads a .docx with hanging indents, double spacing, Times New Roman 12 and real Word styles.
How it works
- Add a source with its DOI or by typing the details. Check them and press “Add to bibliography”.
- The list re-sorts itself. Edit or delete any reference: the citations update right away.
- Copy the list or download the .docx for your paper. Your list stays saved in this browser for when you come back.
Limits
- We checked it against examples published by Purdue OWL and rules from the APA 7 manual, but it does not cover every case. Always check the list before you hand it in.
- For now it supports journal articles, books and web pages.
- When sorting by title, a leading “A”, “An” or “The” is ignored, as APA requires. Spanish articles (El, La, Los, Un…) are not: check the order of those titles.
- The list lives only in this browser: it does not sync across devices and is lost if you clear your browsing data. Download the .docx to keep it.
- If you open it in two tabs at once, the last one to save replaces the other.
Frequently asked questions
Bibliography or reference list?
APA asks for a “References” list containing only the sources you cite. A bibliography can include background reading; use whichever your instructor asks for.
How are similar last names ordered?
Letter by letter, and “nothing comes before something”: Brown, J. comes before Browning, A.
When do you add a, b, c to the year?
When two or more works have exactly the same authors, in the same order, and the same year. They are ordered by title and the letter also goes in the citations: (Smith, 2020a).
Where is my list stored?
Only in this browser, on your device. It is not sent to our servers. A DOI lookup sends only that DOI to Crossref. You can delete all data from the tool itself.
